Art Competition in Collaboration with Mr Tom Young, the British Artist in Lebanon

Working in partnership with Mr Tom Young, the famous British Artist in Lebanon, Brummana High School (BHS) is launching a new art competition for students in Grades 1 to 12 with a fantastic prize to the lucky winners. It is quite fitting that BHS should collaborate with Mr Young especially when considering the school’s rich British roots and history, as well as the Quaker International Education Trust (QuIET) being the school’s ultimate governors, a registered charity in the UK. Please read on for full details of the competition.
Competition Launch Date: Monday, May 4th
Art Topic: The art piece will be communicating the contrasts in one of the following five subjects. Students are welcome to select any topic and create their artwork highlighting the contrasting nature:
- Utopia / Distopia
- Isolation / Connection
- Man-made / Natural environment
- Confinement / Freedom
- Unity / Disunity
Type of Artistic Media: Participants have the freedom to use any media available as long as the idea is clear and well-communicated, and fitting the above challenge subject:
Age Categories: The competition and final selection will be split into two categories:
- Grades 1 to 6 i.e. Lower and Upper Elementary
- Grades 7 to 12 i.e. Intermediate and Secondary
- Parents, Staff, Old Scholars and friends of the school are also welcome to submit entries yet not as part of the competition
Submission Details: Please submit one high resolution photo of your finished work to: marketing@bhs.edu.lb.
Deadline: Wednesday, May 20th; extended now to Monday, May 25th
Selection Criteria: A rubric has been developed and is based on – The idea (development, communication), composition and creativity. Once lockdown is over, and the judging completed by a team of judges based on the photos, a final shortlist will be developed of the best pieces of artwork. These shortlisted pieces will then need to be submitted to the Art Department for final judging, in collaboration with Mr Young.
Prize: Two winners will be picked at the end of this challenge (one from Elementary and one from Upper School) and they will have the opportunity to join and work alongside Mr Young in his studio or in his current art residency location for one whole day once the confinement is over. Also, many of the best submissions will be featured on the school’s social media accounts.
