The school’s sustainability committee met for the first time this year at 4:30pm (Lebanon time) on Tuesday, November 2nd. Joining the meeting were several original members of the committee along with some new members too, including Sarah Barrett our great supporter in the UK. Students from the Upper Primary (Ghiwa A.B. and Elias B.J.), Intermediate (Christo N.) and Secondary (Brad H.B., Toufic Y., Charbel C. and Geordi R.) joined teachers Richard Bampfylde, Lara Feghali and Rula Issa along with Old Scholar and current parent Houssam Shaiban. Some other members of the committee were unable to attend for different reasons.
The committee introduced themselves, Brad shared his research on international schools and their sustainability programmes and ideas for activities this year were shared and discussed by all participants. Lots of lots of possibilities and opportunities, including plastic recycling, waste management, raising awareness, composting, learning of gardens and community spaces, utilising ebooks and technology, renewable containers and bottles and making more use of the prefect system for monitoring and rewarding good sustainability actions on campus are to be further considered and students will now align their projects under one of the Earth Shot Prize categories (https://earthshotprize.org/). Mentors will work with the students to help develop and implement their ideas during this academic year.
This academic promises to be a very positive one for sustainability at Brummana High School, despite all the challenges in Lebanon, and here’s to our students taking forward and achieving success with their ideas. Thank you to all the staff and other adult members of the committee for their support as always.
