Dear Parents,

I write on behalf of the Chairman of the Brummana High School Board of Governors, Mr. Antoine Wakim, and of its members, to tell you that as a mark of respect following the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom, that Brummana High School will close early on Monday 19th September at 12:15pm, the day of Her Majesty’s funeral which will take place on the afternoon of the 19th. Buses will be organized to take students home at 12:30pm.

Brummana High School, as the British School in Lebanon, has long connections with the United Kingdom which date back to its foundation in the 19th Century.  Based on humanitarian, non-political principles which cross all religious and socio economic divides, the school has survived and prospered thanks to its holistic approach to education, complete harmony between the Quakers of the United Kingdom and those of Lebanon, together with continuing good relations with the people of Brummana and of the surrounding areas.

The Governing Body and I note the long life of dutiful service which Her Majesty the Queen has given, and the sense of constancy and stability which she has provided, which have given the school strength and continuity through long periods of uncertainty and sometimes turmoil.  Her late husband, the Duke of Edinburgh, opened Edinburgh Boarding House in 1967. The certainty and determination displayed throughout the long life of Queen Elizabeth II have helped our Quaker Values of Individuality, Respect, Tolerance and Peaceful Resolution to flourish at the school, and for the school to turn out leaders in all walks of life across the Middle East.

We salute Her Majesty’s exceptional qualities and honour her memory.  On behalf of the school, I have registered our condolences in the Book of Condolences at the British Embassy in Beirut.  The Union Jack of the United Kingdom will continue to be flown at half-mast on the Football Field until after the funeral on 19th September.

Yours sincerely,

David Gray
(Principal)
